Messy Flower Hair Clips

I know.... its been a long time, but I am excited about a some fun things that I have been doing and want to share with you. First I want to share with you a quick, easy and completely adorable tutorial. This is one of my FAVORITE clips to make. Here's what you will need.

-Scrap Fabric

-A cup to trace, choose one that is the size you would like your flower to be.

-Fabric cover buttons (buy at walmart or Joanns)

-Barrette or alligator clip

-hot glue gun

-stapler

Cut 8 circles out using a pattern created using your cup and some paper. Fold the circles in fourths and Staple at the point.

Cut a small circle of felt or fabric and glue the pieces onto it. I glue four on, making sure the tips are a little overlapping, then glue the next four on top of the cracks ( meaning not right on top of another but between two of them)

Cover a button following the directions on the package. Glue the button in the center, use lots of glue. Then glue the clip onto the back. There you go! How easy is that!

When My husband was studying for the bar he NEEDED a desk so he could study from home, so we bought this console table and it worked perfect for him, but I was counting down the days till I could take it and use it as my own. Well He was gone at work and so I just did it...

(After texting him for permission,of course... and I take a no response as a yes , so it was a go)

I gave it a million coats and added some glass knobs that I got at anthropology and there we go...cute as can be. I think I would like to get something different to go under it, but am not sure what yet. Any ideas??

I LOVE my White Board

A few weeks ago I bought a really nasty oil painting in a really dirty but awesome frame for $9.99 at Savers. Seriously though the frame was covered in layers and layers of something very similar to poop and dirt mixed together, with a few chicken feathers glued to it. Yum Huh!! After wanting to barf, I scarped some of it off, sanded some more off then finally gave up and just sprayed a good layer of KILZ on it, which my husband swore would block any junk from seeping through. Then painted it and then sanded the edges for that nice worn look.

I bought a HUGE piece of dry erase board at Lowes, they cut it to fit in the frame and ViOla! I am in love with it, I think it looks so great on that brownish color wall. If only my hand writing was a little nicer... I am using it as a calender for the week, and also for a daily check-list.

Birthday Sewing

My baby girl turned 5, and to I thought it would be fun to make her a birthday crown. Well It turned out to be " a clowns hat" ... when I had her put it on in the morning she walked to the mirror and started laughing so hard. She said it looked like a CLOWNS HAT! So much for staying up till midnight to work on a birthday hat! I had to bribe her to wear it, and she for sure was not going to wear it anywhere but around the house.

(I don't really blame her though because its not really as cute as I envisioned it would be)

We had a chef birthday party so I kept busy sewing 6 little aprons (I will make a tutorial on these, because I copied the style of an apron I bought at IKEA that I LOVE) and then making 6 little chef hat (Made from poster board and tissue paper). The party was so much fun, and it was so much fun celebrating her birthday, even though I really really hate that she is getting so big...

I found THIS TUTORIAL over at crazy mom quilts and thought I would make one for my Madre (that's mom in spanish right?..) for her birthday..It was so incredibly easy and pretty darn cute!

I am going to make another on for myself and I think the only thing I will change is that I would like it to have some sort of closure, maybe a button?..?..?

A Jewel or Button

~ Get a t-shirt and cut about a 1 1/2 inch strip from the sleeve.

~Then cute a strip from the center section of the shirt... this will make up the flower, so for a smaller flower cut a thinner strip for a larger flower cute a wider one. Mine was about 2-inches wide.

~ Take the long strip of fabric and start twisting and tucking it in a circle. Putting one layer/tuck right under the other. (Play around a little bit till it looks right to you)

~Once you have it all twisted and tucked take a needle and thread and sew through the center catching all the layers of fabric... do this a few times so it won't fall apart. Its best to thread the needle before you twist the fabric so you don't have to put the flower down in between these steps.

~ Then iron it flat... smush it!

~ After I ironed it I glued down any piece that I could lift up.. this is to make sure that after wearing or washing it it will stay in the same shape. I also glued a jewel in the center to cover up the thread and to add a little bling.

~Glue it onto the circle piece that we cut from the sleeve, make sure to glue it right on top of the seam so that it won't show... and there you go...

I took this picture by myself of myself, I guess I was really putting a lot of physical effort into because my forehead is all wrinkly (I get my wrinkle forehead from my Dad).

My New Sewing space

Last Month or so I decided that I needed a sewing room more than my girls needed a toy room. (I know I am so mean) So I moved all their toys into their bedroom and started putting my sewing room together... I don't have it decorated yet and still need to paint that cute little armoire, but I wanted to show you my new space where I have been doing all my sewing.

After I put the girls to bed I come in here tuen my music on and enjoy some me time.

My Quilt-Along Quilt

I have been working on this quilt for a little while now, I put all the sashing on, and was getting ready to lay it out and then sew the rows together....but...... I realized I was one block short! During our 2 week trip to utah my cute mother-in-law planned a sewing day for the women... it was so much fun! Terri (my mother-in-law) has a HUGE fabric stash and was so sweet to let us go through and use some of it. My in-law Lisa and I had fun making this little bubble skirt.. it is a really basic skirt that we stuffed with tuille to give it a little umph. and of course if you make a skirt you HAVE TO make a matching hair clip!

A New Love of ....Headbands

I have always thought that headbands on little girls were completely adorable, but I am just barely feeling comfortable with wearing them myself. I was in Utah for a couple weeks and while there my sister-in-law and I made some fun girly headbands...

Thie is really simple braided headband, I took three pieces of fabric and braided them together and attached the ends together with a piece of elastic... so easy and it fits really well. Here is a great tutorial on making the braided headband.

Fabric Covered Beads

I have been wanting to make one of these bracelots for a while now and finally found time while on vacation...Here is a brief description of how I made mine

1. Cut a strip of fabric about 31/2 inches wide and then almost double the length you want it to end up.

2. Put the right sides of the fabric together and sew a tube leaving one end open.

3. Tie a know a few inches from the closed end and then put a wood ball in the tube.

4. Tie another knot and continue until its as long as you would like it.

5. Sew the end closed.

6. Plan a date to go out on the town and flaunt your stuff..

Free Finds

So you know I love garage Selling, but I also love "Dunpster Diving"...I haven't really dove into a dumpster (yet), but on sunday or weds evening when all the neighbors have put out their garbage to be picked up the next day, I LOVE to drive around and see if there is anything that I want...

I found this darling bench in someones trash pile, repainted it and tossed a couple pillows on there and have really love it in my entry way!

This big fun slide our neighbor was getting rid of because they didn't need it anymore....PeRfEcT, because we do! We have put this slide to good use, in our home on those realy hot days, into our little pool...

(When we found this I think I came to this realization about material things. That we Don't need them...I know sounds so simple and pretty elementary, but I think that there is so much self impossed pressure to look a certain way... to have your home decorated a certain way, that sometimes I would forget that these things are all disposable...and that you use them for a period and then throw them away)

Then this awesome swing set I found in the free section on Craigslist...if you haven't ever been on craigslist go check it out!

Why I Love Garage Sells

How we shopped before we really knew about garage sells:

So about a year and half ago we moved into a bigger place and had an extra bedroom that we thought would be great for Seth to be able to come home and study in... Our only problem was we didn't have a desk. So we knew we wouldn't be able to spend very much money, so we had this great idea... instead of going to RC Willey or some other big furniture store lets go look at cheap ol' Wal-Mart...

So we found this cute black (fake wood) desk there... it was around $200, we really needed a desk and this was the place we thought we would get the best deal....

Then my friend asked me to go garage selling with her and I couldn't believe what I had been missing out on.... some nice stuff that was either nice as is or needed a little TLC. Now I have been able to pretty much fill our home spending very little money....

We will NEVER go back to thinking that our only option is to buy our furniture brand new.

How we shop now:

We bought this patio table with 6 chairs and six cushions for ....drum roll please.....$40.

I got two of these lamps which I absolutley LOVE for $5....for both of them! I think they have a really fun, nautical look to them.

Decoupage

The options are endless with what you can do with mod podge...I made this framed letter a couple years ago with some torn scrap book paper... I really love it and had so much fun making it.

Garage Sell Chair

I got this chair at a garage sell (it was on a weds...weird! But I saw the sign and couldn't resist!) I bought the chair for $4 sprayed it and recovered it, and there you have it a cute little reading chair. Over at The Nesting Place she hot glues everything so I gave it a try and hot glued the fabirc....it was SO easy and SUPER quick, and I think it looks pretty good!

Recyling Cans

I am fairly new to recycling and am ALWAYS forgetting to put our bins out. Our pick up guys come at around 5:30 am so if I forget the night before we have to wait another two weeks for another chance to empty. So with bins of over flowing cans and bottles I have begun to find places to put those items to use. I had a need for a pen/pencil holder and had so much fun with this little project. I just covered a can with some cute scrapbook paper, then added a scrap of fabric and a cute little flower..

Do you have a great idea for recycling something? If so PLEASE share it!

Good thing I am so cheap and never did...She made this out of a pencil bag... I am going to try and get these made before we leave for our trip to Utah on Thursday.

Favorite Diaper Bag

Almost a year ago I came across THIS pattern by Craft Apple, it took me about six months to get up the confidence (and time) to finally make it.....and I am SO glad I did. I have been using it now for maybe six months and I love it! This is my all time favorite diaper bag EVER! Just look how cute it is....

There is a pocket for everything which makes it feel really organized, and once everything is in its place it leaves lots of free space

DaDdY's ShIrT To BeD

When I was little I remember always making up some excuse as to why I NEEDED to wear my Dads Shirt to bed. Well my girls do the same (okay...maybe they were out of clean pajamas and I was trying to convince them to sleep in their underwear and they for sure would not go for it)... The other night I had an idea to make one of their Daddy's shirts into a night gown and this is what came of it. Now just to warn you, this is my first EVER tutorial so hopefully the directions are clear enough for you to follow....

Find a big comfy shirt owned by Daddy

Lay the shirt out flat and find a dress in your child size to determine the opproximate size you will want to cut the shirt. I cut about an inch from the dress. I did a little of my mommy measuring to measure how big the childs shoulder is from collar bone to shoulder so the sleeve fits right..my girls are 2 & 4 and their shoulders are about 2 inches so I cut the shoulders two inches from the neckline. Cut the bottom 3 inches or so off the shirt to save for the ruffly part

Cut one side, then remove the dress and fold the Daddy shirt in half....use the neck line to determine where the center of the shirt is.....and then cut the second side using the first as a guide.

I made a little pattern to follow...copy the basic shape of the sleeve portion and shrink it...use your awesome creative skills here! You may need to cut the paper and pin it together to make sure it is the right size before you cut the sleeve.

Place the sleeve on the shirt so you can mark where the bottom of the sleeve will sit.

Sew the shrunkin sleeve back together. You can surge it so there is not a raw edge or use a finishing stitch or just don't worry about any raw edges...

Turn the shirt inside out so that right sides are together and sew up the egdes to the pin that is marking the bottom of the sleeve. With the right side of the sleeve out, place the sleeve inside the shirt like the picture below...just slide it right inside so right sides of the sleeve and shirt are touching. Then sew the sleeve on.

Okay now the shirt is put back together, now we just need to finish the shirt off with some ruffles.. Take that bottom piece that we cut off the shirt and do a loose straight stitch so you can gather that little piece... gather it to make it the same size and the bottom of the dress.

Then to make the ruffle stand out a little more sew it with the raw edge showing.

Then get a really grumpy little model to show it off...

Hope that this was helpful, and that there will be lots of little girls getting to wear daddys shirt to bed. My husband loves these night gowns, he thinks its so cute that they want to wear his shirts.

I am really excited and really nervous about starting this blog. I have wanted to do this for a while, but have put it off because I am not sure I will have enough to post about... but I really do have a love for creating things. I have faked my way through many a crafts and feel like it is quite a talent :)... and maybe I could be of some assistance to anyone else who may want to fake their way through a few crafts as well.
